Lady Trojans drop their NCHSAA Volleyball opener at S.Central

Garner Trojans volleyball drop their NCHSAA  opener at S.Central in four sets. Coach Boyette's Lady Trojans qualify for the eighth time in nine seasons but are unable to advance vs the higher seed.  The stellar Lady Trojan careers of Shaylynn Hall, Samantha Armstrong, & Brittney Kamphuis concludes with Hall recording new Garner records in blocks and finished second all-time in kills.

Garner upsets #13 Fuquay to improve to 3-0 in SWAC

Garner wins 26-10 at #13 Fuquay for their 3rd conference win and remain unbeaten in SWAC at 3-0. Nolan McLean 18-yard TD strike to Spencer Stephenson puts Garner up early playing unranked for the fifth consecutive week, a first since 1984. After the Bengals answer and tack on FG, the Trojans trail 10-6 at halftime. An excellent Trojan defensive performance led by Keaton Cooley, shuts out the Bengals in the second half. Jaydin Dixon 4-yard TD run caps their opening drive after the break for 13-10 lead they would not relinquish. Cooley & NaDarius Thompson stop on 4th&1 on Fuquay ensuing drive gives Garner back the ball & Daiveon Carrington scores 5-yard TD run for 20-10 margin. Cooley blocks Bengal FG try with 6:25 left to keep the lead ten & Dixon 6-yard TD run at 3:34 left completes the scoring. Dixon rushes for 189 yards and two scores on the night to lead Garner rushing attack. Cooley stellar defensive night includes 7 tackles, 2 sacks, 4TFLs, blocked kick and 2 QB hurries. The Trojans host Apex next Friday night as conference play continues.

JV Trojans fall to Fuquay 33-32

DJ Alston rushes for 181 yards and 2TDs and scores on blocked punt for Garner JV in 33-32 loss to Fuquay in SWAC action. The JV Bengals drive for the winning TD with 1:03 to go for the win in the matchup of conference unbeatens. Alston blocks Fuquay punt and recovers in the end zone with 6:31 left to give the Trojans 32-27 lead. He scored on 64- and 46-yard runs as well. Daveon Dunn hooked up with Tom Horton for 52 yards and 21 yards touchdowns. The JV Trojans (7-1) 10-game win streak ends but they remain in the SWAC hunt at 2-1 host Apex next Thursday

2018 Trojan Hall for Fame inductees

The Garner Trojan Club and Garner Magnet High School announce the selection of the 8th Hall of Fame Class: Former Coach and Athletic Director Nelson Smith, Two-time State Champion Cheer Coach Helen Sommerville Stephens (’80), Professional football player Anthony Blaylock (’84) & Two-time National Champion soccer star Kasey Monroe Monaghan (’92). The 2018 class will be introduced at the home football game Oct. 27th and inducted in ceremonies May 3, 2018 at the Grand Marquise Ballroom in Garner. Congratulations to our Class of 2018 inductees!

  • Kasey Monroe Monaghan (’92): 1989-1992 Soccer Captain, team MVP, & All Conference soccer selection, 4-year letterman in track and cross-country; 1991 All-Metro, Inaugural 1992 NC Coaches Association East-West All-star game MVP; All-State 1991 & 1992; 1992 All South Team, NCHSAA academic all-star, 1991-1992 Who’s Who in Sports, Bill Gibson Scholar/Athletic award; 1992 Wake County Student Athlete of the Year, Army Reserve Scholar/Athletic award; UNC Chapel Hill 1992-1994,  ACC Honor Roll each year, 2 ACC Championships, 2 NCAA Championships, Morehead Scholarship finalist; 1994 Campbell University Presidential Scholarship. CASL Hall of Fame inductee in 2011. Her stellar academic resume and work with her husband Pastor Reid Monaghan for the Athletes in Action as well as renowned coaching resume with teams like the North Carolina, New Jersey and Virginia Olympic Development programs, Ms. Monaghan displays the exceptional skills and community service worthy of our Hall of Fame.
  • Anthony Blaylock (’84) Mr. Blaylock is two-time inductee into the Winston-Salem State Hall of Fame as individual and this season with his 1987 CIAA Championship Ram team. Captain of Hall of Famer Hal Stewart’s first Garner football squad laid the foundation and work ethic Garner plays with today and was instrumental in the start of our current 32 year playoff streak. After a stellar football career at Winston-Salem State University Anthony Blaylock was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 1988. A fourth-round selection, Anthony spent four and a half years with the Browns before moving on to the San Diego Chargers. He ended his football career with the Chicago Bears in 1993. While playing in 71 games as a professional, Anthony registered six interceptions, five sacks, and one fumble recovery for a touchdown. He was the 3rd of our 7 professional football players. Mr. Blaylock is currently the President/CEO of The Blaylock Group Mr. Blaylock is also committed to the communities in which he serves. He is an advocate for Community Youth Programs. He is also a third degree black belt, who trained and taught martial arts Tae Kwon Do. He continues to make charitable contributions, and was honored by the Mayor of the City of Atlanta and given a proclamation declaring January 30th as Anthony Blaylock Day in the City of Atlanta.
  • Coach Helen Sommerville Stephens (‘80): 30-year educator with WCPSS. Varsity cheer coach at Garner High School 1989-2014. State Championship squads 1993 and 2008 & 3rd in the State in 1997; Coach Stephens was the 1997 North Carolina Cheerleading Coaches Association (NCCCA) Coach of the Year; 1998 & 2014 National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) Coach of the Year for Section 3 of USA; 2013 GNRC Coach of the Year; Served as President of NCCCA 1999-2001; Founder of Wake County Cheerleading Competition in 1990 which has grown to be one of the largest high school competitions in the NC; Cheerleading Consultant for Wake County Public School System for over 10 years: Responsible for all cheerleading coaches education classes and safety. Considered top cheerleading safety specialist in NC: Presented NFHS Spirit rules to cheer coaches across NC as a presenter at the NCCCA conferences and for other conferences and counties. Coached 16 athletes who earned college cheer team selections. Ms. Stephens was cheerleader for 3 years at Garner; JV team 1977-78 (Captain); Beta Club State Vice-president for NC; Sophomore class officer; Outstanding Math Student sophomore and Senior years, Junior Marshall, Outstanding Senior 1980; JV Cheer Coach at Garner High School: 1987-1989; JV Cheer Coach at Broughton High School: 1984-1987; Pop Warner Cheerleading: 3 years
  • Coach Nelson Smith: Legendary NC Coach, 31-year career with Garner as Head Coach 1999-2012 & assistant to Hall of Fame Coach Hal Stewart 1992-1999. Career spans 1987 NCHSAA 4A Championship, title game appearances in 1998 & 2011, 23 conference titles compiling a head coaching career record of 144-30; 102 players earned collegiate careers with 6 professional players; Served as Head Coach of the 2006 NC Shrine Bowl (one of 2 individuals to be former Shrine Bowl Player, Assistant Coach, and Head Coach) 2004 NC Coaches Association East teams; 9-time conference Coach of the Year; Served as Athletic Director at Garner in 2013-’14

Seniors claim Powder Puff win

The Class of 2018 takes the Powder Puff title, defeating the Juniors in the finals. The event was delayed twice due to weather issues during Homecoming 2017. The Sophomores down the Freshmen in the 3rd place matchup.

Ward advances to NCHSSA State Championship Golf

Garner Trojans senior Kayla Ward shot 74 for second at NCHSAA Eastern Regional Golf at The Emerald Golf Course in New Bern. The SWAC Champion advances to the NCHSAA State Championship next Monday/Tuesday at Pinehurst #1

Jacobi Asor-Sallaah leads Garner cross-country at the SWAC Championship with 17:25.54 in the 5K. Ashton Olmstead records 19:30.99, & George Ellis 19:46.24. Sierra Moore leads the Lady Trojans with 22:37.30 & Abby Durbal records 22:56.12.
